I was asked to create a logo by Steph at the Artisan Snail Company, which is the only snail farm in Yorkshire and soon to be providers of the “ultimate in slow food”.
Steph liked the look of the previous lino-cuts and wood-cut I had done, with a simple border and a bold design. He sent me his vision of the finished logo:
Before I started we agreed that it may be better for Steph to add the lettering underneath, and after a drawing or two I got chiseling into the wood block. I’ve got a sackful of blocks around this size, I’m unsure what they are but they carve well enough for a wood-cut and take the ink well.
The block with the traced design, and the same block carved and ready to ink. Note my high-tech printing-press (some screwed-together bits of pallet and a wooden spoon!)
Inked and ready to print.
Before ………and after.
Steph is happy for me to sell this alongside my other prints : I’m calling it “Hoddyman Dod” , which is is a local English vernacular word for a land snail.

He’s pretty well qualified, being (a) a qualified chef, and (b) French, and he’s a thoroughly nice chap. We wish him good luck.
