It was a bit of a challenge carving this small spruce stump – I’d hoped it would be similar to cedar, easy to work and a pleasant colour, but this was more akin to carving damp plywood with the occasional dollops of treacle-like sap thrown in for good measure. With that to contend with, plus the large knots across the surface, I’m more than pleased with how he turned out.
