I had most of the day off to visit the Yorkshire Sculpture Park ~ well, it was my birthday, and we had a great time admiring the enormous cedar creations by Ursula von Rydingsvard.
Many were coloured with graphite and chalk, which complimented the cedar’s almost metallic sheen. It was intriguing from my perspective to look beyond the ideas and concept of the pieces and admire the technical aspects ~ how they were constructed, how they are transported etc.
Also at the Sculpture Park this season are some works by Ai Weiwei, the highlight for me being Iron Tree. Inspired by the wood sold by street vendors in Jingdezhen, southern China, the tree was constructed from casts of branches, roots and trunks from different trees.
