The last log to be carved in Bluebell Wood, Sewerby Hall, and this was probably the oddest shape of the lot.
Once I’d stripped some bark off, the forked end at the left looked a bit like legs, and I worked on ideas using the lump as a knee; this was the plan right up until I began drawing on the design, but it just didn’t seem right….in fact it seemed a bit dull. I needed something else, and realised I could turn the lump into a classic Fairytale snail, crawling up towards a gnome; it gave the carving just that extra bit of interest.
