We recently paid a visit to the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull to view the latest poppy installation by Martin Waters, “Eleven”; Martin has been working on these poppy installations since 2011, but this year’s is particularly poignant with it being the 100 year anniversary of the start of World War 1.

I met Martin at the Creative and Cultural Art Space in Hull back in May, with the Freedom Flame exhibition ~ he’s a nice chap and I’m always impressed with his ability to produce new and interesting angles on the poppy theme.

A couple of years ago, the series “All In The Best Possible Taste” on Channel 4 showed the artist Grayson Perry working on six tapestries inspired by “A Rake’s Progress” by Hogarth and his discussions with various people from differing social backgrounds. It was a great series, as was his more recent “Who Are You?” which focused on identities through styles of portraiture.

The tapestries are on show at Temple Newsam near Leeds until December this year, when they will go on an international tour ~ so we made an effort to see them while we could. They were fantastic and well worth the trip.
