Getting Medieval

I’ve always been a fan of medieval carvings, especially the Romanesque style found at Kilpeck church in Herefordshire etc: the “beakhead” and beast-head ornaments found around the doors.

I think the variety of designs and the clean, simplistic style is fantastic, and for years I’d fancied carving one for my own amusement ~ of course, until the current situation I’d not had the opportunity.

I had a look for a suitable beakhead to copy, and found a nice one from Lincoln Cathedral. The protruding tongue could be adapted to lay flat rather than following the curved architectural moulding of the door.

All finished, and with a nice dark wax finish.
