Allen Stichler – Wood Carving carving-news Mires Beck Carving Course

Mires Beck Carving Course

Previous years have seen 2 or even 3 woodcarving courses at Mires Beck, but of course this is no ordinary year ~ as well as the Spring workshops here, I’d had to cancel ones in Scunthorpe and Bridlington; now, as the weather suddenly became Autumnal, we had a socially-distanced “rule of 6” group (including me!), fully masked and smothered in antibac.

It all seemed a bit strange, as do most things now, but we all got on with it and enjoyed the process ~ as usual, the emotions amongst the participants over the 3 sessions went from joy to panic – to delight at the finished product.

Here are a few photos of the participants at work:

Andy sculpting a skull
Chris creating a razorbill
Heather happily carving her owl
Glan gouging near the owl’s head
Steve chipping at his tree

A hard day ~ not only was the sun blazing down constantly, but most of the carving was done at the top of the ladder and stretching above head height.
