The fourth panel at Sewerby Hall, and quite a tricky one ~ full of branch-knots and along the centre a deep strip of the cork-like pith: positioning the text and the wildlife carving would take some thought.
There was only one place for the carving ~ a snail, this time ~ and it meant part of the shell was unavoidably split by this corky line; the lettering was carved on a wave to avoid the knots and be of a reasonable size.
